Today we packed up our trailer again and headed east to Shinneyboo Creek Cabin Resort, home of Evan and Stephanie's wedding. We approached the place with a sense of foreboding, as we were met with a closed gate at the end of a long windy road with nowhere we could possibly turn our RV around. No one at the resort was answering their phones either, possibly because check in time was 4 pm and we were about 4 or 5 hours early. We made the executive decision to ignore the sign and open the gate only to come to another gate, this one with cones in front of it. Fortunately, someone finally answered the phone: Mike, the resort host. He told us to just open the gate, some through, and close it behind us. It seemed like a strange way to welcome one's guests. Maybe this is how all mountain people do things.
Anyway, it is a beautiful place with a main house and some cabins with lofts scattered around it. It reminded me a bit of the place where Mike and Emily got married in the Berkshires, and a bit of our old house as well. When everybody finally met up, we took a walk down to one part of the river.
We didn't stay long since we had to get cleaned up for dinner. The entire wedding party was meeting up to go to a place called the Rainbow Lodge, so we quickly hiked back to the cabins. I did have to pause, however, to get a picture of these big black ants that were ranging around this tree. There's no point of reference in the picture, but I think they were at least a half inch long.

Dinner was interesting. It was great to meet the whole family, and the setting was picturesque. Rainbow Lodge gives off a very warm, waspy sort of vibe (can I say that?). It evokes memories of ski lodges and snow. The food wasn't great, but everything else was.
